Attingal Palace
Attingal Palace, also known as Koyikkal Palace, is a site of immense historical importance in Kerala. It was the maternal home of the Travancore Royal Family. For centuries, the Queens of Attingal (Attingal Ranis) held sovereign rights over the region, and this palace was their seat of power. Great rulers like Marthanda Varma were brought up here. The palace complex is situated on a 10-acre plot near the Vamanapuram River. It houses several ancient temples, including the 700-year-old Palliyara Bhagavathy temple and the family deity Thiruvarattukavu Devi. The palace is built in the traditional Kerala style, using wood and stone. It features the "Ettukettu" (eight-sided) architecture, which allows for excellent ventilation and light. Despite its age, the palace retains an aura of royal dignity. It has been a silent witness to many historical treaties and the famous Attingal Rebellion. Today, parts of the palace are under the care of the Devaswom Board. It remains a spiritual and cultural hub for the people of Attingal.
