FAQs On Wanaparthy Palace

Wanaparthy, Telangana, India
The Wanaparthy Palace, historically known as Mustafa Mahal (named after a Muslim saint, which speaks to the regional secular history), is a grand, historic architectural landmark that served as the primary residence of the Rajas of Wanaparthy Samsthanam. Constructed in the 18th-19th Century by the f ormer rulers, the palace is a magnificent fusion of three distinct architectural styles: European (Colonial), Mughal, and traditional South Indian design, reflecting the diverse political and cultural influences of the time. The most unique and commendable aspect of the palace's history is its post-independence transformation: Raja Rameshwar Rao II donated the palace and its surrounding land to the cause of education. Since 1959, it has been the site of the K.D.R. Government Polytechnic College, the first polytechnic college in Telangana, inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This dual identity—a regal residence turned educational institution—makes the palace a potent symbol of Wanaparthy's transition from a princely state to a modern democracy, showcasing the Samsthanam's lasting legacy of public service. Though access is primarily through the college administration, the imposing exterior and preserved historical sections offer a profound glimpse into the region's royal past and the philanthropic spirit of its former rulers.
