Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary
Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1989, is one of India's most biodiverse and secluded protected areas. Named after the Kamlang River that flows through it, the sanctuary covers an area of 783 sq km. It is a land of dense tropical forests, alpine meadows, and breathtaking high-altitude lak es. The crown jewel of the sanctuary is the Glow Lake, located at an altitude of 5000 feet, which requires a rigorous trek to reach. The sanctuary is home to the "Big Four" feline species: Tiger, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, and Snow Leopard (in higher reaches). It is also a sanctuary for the Hoolock Gibbon, the only ape found in India. The flora is equally impressive, with hundreds of species of orchids, bamboos, and medicinal plants used by the local Mishmi tribes. Visiting Kamlang is not just a wildlife trip; it is an immersion into a landscape that has remained largely untouched by modern civilization. The terrain is rugged, with altitudes varying from 600 meters to over 4000 meters. The local Digaru Mishmi and Miju Mishmi tribes have a deep spiritual connection with these forests, considering many parts of the sanctuary as sacred. The sanctuary also borders the Namdapha National Park, creating a massive contiguous forest belt that is vital for tiger conservation. For the intrepid traveler, Kamlang offers a chance to see rare species like the Takin and the Capped Langur in their natural, wild habitat.
