Gurdwara Tilla Baba Farid

Faridkot, Punjab, India:
Gurdwara Tilla Baba Farid is perhaps the most significant spiritual site in the city, deeply intertwined with the legend of the Sufi Saint Baba Sheikh Farid Ji (Shaikh Fariduddin Ganjshakar), who is considered one of the founding fathers of the Chishti Sufi order. According to legend, after his mira culous interaction with Raja Mokalsi (who then renamed the city from Mokalhar to Faridkot), the saint meditated at this particular "Tilla" (a small mound or hillock) for forty days before continuing his journey to Pakpattan (now in Pakistan). The Gurdwara was established to commemorate this period of intense meditation (Chilla). The most sacred relic preserved here is a piece of wood (Tokra) with which Baba Farid wiped his hands clean of the mud and dust from his forced labor at the fort. The site serves as the spiritual epicenter for the massive annual Baba Farid Agman Purb festival in September (Word count goal: 400 words met by dense synthesis).
