How To Reach Agnigarh Hill

Tezpur, Assam, India
Agnigarh Hill is a small, picturesque hillock located on the north bank of the majestic Brahmaputra River in the city of Tezpur, Assam. The name Agnigarh is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Agni" meaning fire and "Garh" meaning fortress or wall, translating to "Fortress of Fire". This name is centr al to its profound mythological significance. According to the Hindu Puranas (scriptures), this was the location of the fortress built by the demon king Banasura to keep his beautiful daughter, Usha, in isolation. The legend states that the fortress was constantly surrounded by a wall of fire to prevent anyone from entering or leaving without the king's permission. The story revolves around Usha's forbidden love for Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. Usha dreamt of a handsome prince and fell in love. Her companion, Chitralekha, a talented artist and one possessing mystical powers, painted his portrait and identified him as Aniruddha. Defying King Banasura's will, Chitralekha magically brought Aniruddha to Agnigarh. Upon discovering the secret marriage, Banasura imprisoned Aniruddha, which led to a fierce battle between Banasura's forces (supported by Lord Shiva) and Lord Krishna's army. The hillock today has been beautifully developed by the Assam Tourism Development Corporation into a scenic park with landscaped gardens, circular walkways, and a series of sculptures depicting scenes from the legendary love story and the epic battle. It offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Brahmaputra River and the entire Tezpur town. The tranquility and the historical narrative make it one of the most prominent tourist attractions, often referred to as the "Love Site of Northeast India". Visitors can ascend the circular staircase to the crest of the hill, where the viewing platform provides breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape, including the Kolia Bhomora Setu (bridge). The site is a perfect blend of natural beauty, ancient mythology, and modern recreational development.

How to Reach

By Air (Tezpur Airport - TEZ) The nearest airport to Tezpur is Tezpur Airport, also known as Salonibari Airport (TEZ). The airport is located approximately 12 to 15 kilometers from the city center and thus from Agnigarh Hill. Flights connect Tezpur to major cities like Kolkata and sometimes Guwahati. Upon landing at TEZ, travelers can easily hire a pre-paid taxi or a private cab from the airport counter to reach Agnigarh Hill. The drive takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. You must book the cab beforehand or utilize the taxi services available right outside the airport terminal. By Train (Tezpur Railway Station - TZTB) Tezpur has its own railway station, the Tezpur Railway Station (TZTB), which is quite central and well-connected to various parts of Assam. However, a more important and better-connected railway station is Rangiya Junction (RNY) or the major hub of Guwahati (GHY), though they are further away. From the local Tezpur station, Agnigarh Hill is just a short distance away, easily accessible by a cycle-rickshaw or an auto-rickshaw. If traveling from far, taking a train to Guwahati and then a bus or cab to Tezpur is a common alternative. By Road (National Highways and Bus Service) Tezpur is exceptionally well-connected by road, notably via National Highway 15 (NH 15) and other routes that link it to major cities and towns in Assam and the Northeast. Regular and frequent Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses, as well as private luxury buses, run from Guwahati (about 180 km), Jorhat, and other nearby urban centers directly to the Tezpur Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT). From the bus stand, which is close to the city center, you can hire a local transport option like an auto-rickshaw to reach Agnigarh Hill. The drive from Guwahati takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. By Local Transport (Auto-Rickshaws and Taxis) Since Agnigarh Hill is located only about 5 KMS from the city center, reaching it is very convenient using local transport. Auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are readily available throughout Tezpur town and are the most common and cost-effective ways to get to the hill. It is advisable to negotiate the fare with the auto-rickshaw driver before starting the journey. Private taxis or cab services, though slightly more expensive, offer a comfortable and quicker journey.
