How To Reach Chitrashala

Bundi, Rajasthan, India
The Chitrashala, literally translating to "Gallery of Pictures," is a magnificent open-air pavilion and gallery nestled within the extensive Garh Palace complex in Bundi. Also historically known as Umaid Mahal, it was commissioned by Maharao Raja Umed Singh in the 18th century (specifically the firs t half of the 18th century or between 1773 and 1821 CE). This architectural marvel served as a private audience chamber and a leisure spot for the royal family. Its primary fame rests on the remarkably preserved and vibrant wall paintings and frescoes that adorn its walls and ceilings. These murals are the finest examples of the Bundi School of Painting, an independent branch of the Mewar School of Painting. The frescoes beautifully depict scenes from Hindu mythology, particularly the 'Raas Leela' (stories of Lord Krishna and Radha), court life, royal processions, hunting scenes, and the detailed representation of beautiful women. The use of vibrant colors, especially a striking combination of green and blue, and the intricate details in the depictions of human figures and clothing are characteristic features. The gallery is a profound testament to the artistic and cultural zenith achieved by the Hada Rajput rulers of Bundi. Its elevated location offers a captivating view of the surrounding palace and the town below, making it a feast for both art and history enthusiasts. The pavilion itself is open on one side, allowing ample natural light to illuminate the vivid artwork.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Jaipur International Airport (JAI), located approximately 210 km from Bundi. This airport is well-connected to all major cities in India (like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc. ) and some international destinations. From Jaipur, you can hire a private taxi, take a pre-booked car service, or take a state transport bus directly to Bundi. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours. Alternatively, the Udaipur Airport (UDR), at roughly 280 km, can also be an option.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Bundi Railway Station (BNDI), which is on a local line and has connections to nearby cities like Kota. The major railhead, however, is Kota Junction (KOTA), which is only about 40 km away and is a main stop on the DelhiRs.Mumbai and JaipurRs.Mumbai routes. Kota is well-connected to almost all major Indian cities. From Kota, one can easily hire a local taxi or take a public bus to reach Bundi in about an hour.

By Road: Bundi is well-connected by road, lying close to the National Highway network. It can be reached easily from major cities in Rajasthan and neighboring states. Regular state-run and private buses connect Bundi to Kota (40 km), Jaipur (210 km), Ajmer (165 km), and Chittorgarh (150 km). Driving to Bundi offers scenic views of the Hadoti region. The roads are generally in good condition.

By Local Transport: Once in Bundi town, the Chitrashala (which is uphill inside the palace complex) can be reached by a short auto-rickshaw ride from the city center, which can drop you near the main entrance of the Garh Palace (Hathiya Pol). From the entrance, it is a significant uphill walk through the various palace courtyards and levels to reach the Chitrashala. It is a walk that can take about 20-30 minutes and is physically demanding but rewarding.
