How To Reach Government Museum

Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, India
The Government Museum, Fateh Prakash Palace, is a prominent cultural landmark located within the historic Chittorgarh Fort. Housed in the magnificent Fateh Prakash Palace, the museum serves as a comprehensive repository of the region's rich history, art, and tribal heritage. The palace itself was co nstructed by Maharana Fateh Singh (1884-1930) of Mewar and is a fine example of modern Indian architecture, offering a stark yet complementary contrast to the ancient ruins of the fort. In 1968, a large portion of the palace was converted into this public museum by the Government of Rajasthan's Department of Archaeology and Museums. The museum?s collection is vast and diverse, spread across several galleries. Key exhibits include a rich array of ancient stone sculptures dating from the 8th to 12th centuries?many excavated from the fort and nearby regions?depicting Hindu and Jain deities. Visitors can explore a dedicated weaponry section showcasing an impressive collection of antique swords, daggers, axes, shields, and helmets used by Rajput warriors. Most relevant to the prompt, the museum also contains a significant section dedicated to tribal life and wood crafts, particularly from the local Bassi village. This gallery features clay replicas of regional tribal people, like the Bhil tribe, dressed in their traditional attire, along with their daily use objects, jewellery, and tools. This section vividly portrays the ethnography and anthropology of the Mewar region, offering a deeper understanding of the local indigenous culture that has coexisted with the royal history of the fort. The museum, therefore, acts as a vital link, connecting the grand history of the Rajputs with the enduring culture of the local tribes. ##

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) in Udaipur, approximately 90-100 KMS away. From the airport, one can hire a pre-paid taxi, a private car, or take a bus to Chittorgarh. The drive takes about 2 to 2. 5 hours. Another option is Jaipur International Airport (JAI), which is much farther (320 KMS), but offers more domestic and international connections. From Jaipur, a long train or road journey is required.

By Train: The Chittorgarh Railway Station (COR) is a major railway junction on the Western Railways network and is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Udaipur. The station is only about 7 KMS from the fort entrance (Ram Pol). From the railway station, you can easily hire an auto-rickshaw or a local taxi to take you up to the fort's main gates.

By Road: Chittorgarh is excellently connected by National Highways (NH), notably being on the Golden Quadrilateral road network (NH 48). Regular and comfortable bus services (Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) and private operators) are available from major cities like Udaipur (~115 KMS), Ajmer (~180 KMS), Jaipur (~320 KMS), and Delhi (~580 KMS). If driving a private or hired car, the winding road up to the fort is well-maintained, and parking is available near the main attractions inside the fort.

By Local Transport: Once in Chittorgarh City, local transport is the key to reaching the fort and the museum. Auto-rickshaws and Taxis are readily available from the railway station and bus stand. You can hire them for a one-way trip or negotiate for a return trip including waiting time for your visit. The fort is large, and though the museum is near the main gate (Ram Pol), exploring the entire fort requires covering significant distances. For this, you can hire a local fort guide-cum-taxi (usually a specific vehicle type authorised to operate inside) right from the entrance of the fort who will drive you to all the major sites, including the museum.
