How To Reach Joy Durga Temple

Hajo, Assam, India
The Joy Durga Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, the manifestation of supreme energy and power, often depicted with ten arms. It stands as a significant religious landmark within the spiritual confluence of Hajo. The temple's construction is attributed to the powerful Ahom King Lakshminath Singha around the year 1774 A.D., which places it in the late medieval period of Assamese history. The primary deity housed within the sanctum sanctorum is a beautiful, striking stone image of Goddess Durga with ten arms, positioned on her altar. This ten-armed form is known as Mahishasuramardini or Dashabhuja Durga, the slayer of the buffalo demon. The temple is one of the important shrines that form part of the larger religious landscape of Hajo, which is often referred to as Panchatirtha (Five Pilgrimage Sites), although the term sometimes primarily refers to the Vaishnavite and Shaivite temples. The temple's establishment under the Ahom patronage highlights the continued tradition of Shaktism (worship of the Mother Goddess) in the region alongside Vaishnavism and Shaivism. Devotees visit the temple throughout the year to seek the blessings of the fierce yet compassionate Mother Goddess. The atmosphere around the temple is typically peaceful and pious, offering a sense of spiritual tranquility amidst the daily rituals and prayers. The structural integrity and the maintenance of the temple over centuries reflect its deep cultural and religious importance to the people of Assam.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, which is approximately 35-40 KMS from Hajo. The airport is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore.

From the airport, you have several options: Pre-paid

Taxi/Cab: This is the most convenient option. The ride takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on traffic, and costs approximately Rs.800 - Rs.1200. App-based Ride-sharing (Ola/Uber) Often available for slightly lower fares. Bookings should be made in advance.

Private Car Rental: If you plan to explore the region extensively, renting a private car with a driver for a day or more is a good option.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY), about 30 KMS away, or the nearby Kamakhya Railway Station (KYQ), about 26 KMS away. Both stations are major hubs with excellent connectivity to the rest of India. From the railway station, the process is similar to the airport:

Taxi/Cab: Readily available outside the station. The fare and travel time are comparable to the airport route.

Local Auto-rickshaws: Cheaper, but less comfortable for long-distance travel, and you may need to switch transport in Guwahati city before heading to Hajo.

By Road: Hajo is very well-connected by road, lying about 25-30 KMS northwest of Guwahati city center. The journey from Guwahati takes about 1 hour. State Transport Buses (ASTC) Regular government-run and private buses ply the Guwahati-Hajo route from the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminus) or local bus stands in Guwahati.

Shared Taxis/Sumos: A very popular and economical local transport option. These shared vehicles run frequently between Guwahati and Hajo town.

Private Vehicle: Driving your own car or a rented vehicle is straightforward, primarily following NH 27 and then taking a state highway to Hajo. The roads are generally in good condition. By Local Transport (Within Hajo) Once you reach Hajo, the temple sites are relatively close to each other. Auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are the primary local transport for short distances within the town. They are cheap and easily available. Walking is also a great option, as the major temples like Joy Durga Temple, Hayagriva Madhava Temple, and Poa Mecca are often within walking distance or a very short ride from the main Hajo market area.
