How To Reach Karni Mata Temple

Udaipur, Rajasthan, India
The Shri Manshapurna Karni Mata Temple is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Karni Mata, a female sage believed to be an incarnation of the warrior Goddess Durga. Located atop the picturesque Machla Magra Hill, near the Doodh Talai Lake area in Udaipur, this temple is not only a significant pilgrim age site but also one of the city's most popular tourist destinations, primarily for the unparalleled views it offers. The temple was originally commissioned by Maharana Karan Singh between 1620 and 1628 to serve the surrounding residential area. Unlike the famous Karni Mata Temple in Deshnoke (Bikaner) which is renowned for its large rat population, the Udaipur temple is a quiet, tranquil shrine housing a sacred stone idol of the Goddess. The modern accessibility of the temple is greatly enhanced by the Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway (also known as the Udaipur Ropeway), which connects the base station at Doodh Talai Musical Garden (Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Park) to the hilltop. The ropeway, Rajasthan?s first aerial tramway, offers a quick and exhilarating ride, giving visitors breathtaking 360-degree aerial views of Udaipur?s most iconic sights. From the temple complex, the panoramic view is truly spectacular, encompassing Lake Pichola, the City Palace, Jag Mandir, the white marble Lake Palace, and the distant Sajjangarh Fort (Monsoon Palace). The hillock itself is a fantastic sunset point, attracting crowds who wish to watch the sun set over the Aravalli hills, casting a golden glow over the city. The entire experience?the ropeway ride, the spiritual visit, and the panoramic views?makes the Karni Mata Temple complex a perfect blend of faith, adventure, and natural beauty. The temple itself is a simple yet elegant stone structure, providing a peaceful haven for devotees and sightseers alike.

How to Reach

By Air:

Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR): The nearest air gateway is

Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR), located about 24 kilometers away. The airport is connected to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. From the airport, a taxi or private cab (approx. 45-60 minutes) is required to reach the base of the ropeway at Doodh Talai Musical Garden. Prepaid taxis or app-based cabs are the most reliable option.

By Train:

Udaipur City Railway Station (UDZ): The

Udaipur City Railway Station (UDZ) is the closest railhead, situated only about 3-4 kilometers from the base station of the ropeway at Doodh Talai. The journey from the station is very short and typically takes 10-15 minutes by auto-rickshaw or taxi. The availability of local transport outside the station is very high.

By Road:

Central City Location: The temple's base (at Doodh Talai) is located centrally within Udaipur and is easily accessible by city roads. Udaipur itself is well-connected by National Highways (like NH48). If driving a private vehicle, you will need to find parking near the Doodh Talai complex, which can be limited, especially in the evening. The local bus stand is also close enough for an easy auto-rickshaw connection.

By Local Transport:

Ropeway, Auto-Rickshaw, and Foot:

- Ropeway (Mandatory for Top): The final approach to the temple from the base is via the Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway (highly recommended) or the lengthy staircase. The ropeway terminal is right next to Doodh Talai Musical Garden.

- Auto-Rickshaws: These are the primary means of reaching the ropeway base station from anywhere in the city. The ride is quick and affordable. Always confirm the price beforehand.

- Walking: If you are staying in the Pichola or City Palace area, the walk to the ropeway base is scenic and takes about 20-30 minutes. The walk up the stairs is a good, rigorous exercise option but should be avoided in the midday heat.
