How To Reach Lake Palace

Udaipur, Rajasthan, India
The Lake Palace, now officially the Taj Lake Palace, is one of the most iconic and romantic hotels in the world, renowned for its shimmering white marble architecture that appears to float on the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola. Originally named Jag Niwas after its founder, Maharana Jagat Singh II o f the Mewar dynasty, its construction began in 1743 and was completed in 1746. It was built as a royal summer palace and pleasure retreat for the Maharana to escape the scorching Rajasthan heat and hold private, decadent gatherings away from the public eye of the City Palace. For over a century, it served as a summer resort for the succeeding rulers of Mewar. The palace, spanning approximately 4 acres on the natural rock island of Jag Niwas, faced an era of neglect in the late 19th century. A pivotal transformation occurred in the mid-20th century when Maharana Bhagwat Singh of Udaipur decided to convert the palace into a luxury hotel. This bold move, beginning around 1963, marked its transition into Udaipur?s first luxury hotel. In 1971, the management was taken over by the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces group, solidifying its status as a world-class heritage hotel. It boasts 83 luxurious rooms and suites. The palace's ethereal beauty has made it a favorite filming location, most famously featured as the home of the titular character in the 1983 James Bond movie, Octopussy, which significantly boosted its global fame. Today, it stands as a magnificent symbol of Rajput regal elegance, offering an unparalleled experience of luxury, history, and romance. ###

How to Reach

The Lake Palace (Taj) is uniquely situated on an island in Lake Pichola, making access only possible via a dedicated boat service operated by the hotel.

By Air (Nearest Airport:

Maharana Pratap Airport - UDR):

Distance
: The Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR), also known as Dabok Airport, is approximately 24 km from the Udaipur city center/City Palace Complex.

Travel Time
: The car journey typically takes about 40 to 50 minutes, depending on traffic.

Procedure
: Upon arrival at UDR, a pre-arranged hotel car/taxi (which the hotel concierge can organize, often a luxurious sedan or vintage car for a royal touch) will transfer you directly to the Taj Lake Palace's private jetty at the City Palace Complex (Bansi Ghat). From this jetty, the transfer is completed via a complimentary, exclusive speed boat ride, which takes a brief 5 minutes to cross to the island.

By Train (Nearest Station:

Udaipur City Railway Station - UDZ):

Distance
: The Udaipur City Railway Station (UDZ) is approximately 4 km from the City Palace Complex.

Travel Time
: The auto-rickshaw or taxi journey takes about 15-25 minutes.

Procedure
: From the railway station, hire a local taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach the City Palace Complex or the Bansi Ghat jetty area. Once at the designated private jetty, the remaining journey is completed by the hotel's exclusive speed boat transfer. It is essential to inform the hotel of your arrival time to ensure a seamless boat transfer.

By Road (From Nearby Cities):

Routes: Udaipur is well-connected by National Highways.

Key distances include: Jaipur (approx. 400 km, 6-7 hours), Ahmedabad (approx. 250 km, 4-5 hours), and Jodhpur (approx. 250 km, 5-6 hours).

Procedure
: If traveling by car, the final destination for your vehicle will be a secure parking area near the City Palace Complex. The hotel's staff will meet you at the private jetty (Bansi Ghat) to assist with luggage and board you onto the exclusive speed boat for the final, short transfer to the island palace.

By Local Transport:

Local Taxis/Auto-Rickshaws: The most convenient local transport is to hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi, which can drop you directly near the City Palace Complex (Bansi Ghat) jetty area. The distance from the city center is small (approx. 3-4 km).

Final Leg: Remember, the final leg of the journey, across the lake, is exclusively handled by the Taj Lake Palace's private boat service, which is mandatory for access to the island. Public boats on Lake Pichola (like those from Rameshwar Ghat) only offer sightseeing around the palace and to Jag Mandir, but do not provide landing access to the Lake Palace.
