A Monument of Islamic Heritage: Mecca Masjid, or Makkah Masjid, is one of the oldest and largest mosques in Hyderabad and one of the most revered Islamic pilgrimage sites in India. Its construction began in 1614 under the fifth Qutb Shahi Sultan, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, who personally laid the foun dation stone. The project was massive, employing approximately 8,000 workers, and took an astonishing 77 years to complete, finally being finished in 1694 by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The mosque is strategically located adjacent to the iconic Charminar and the bustling Laad Bazaar, forming a historical and cultural quadrangle in the heart of the Old City. Legend states that the Sultan ordered the main arch-stones to be brought from the holy city of Mecca, hence the mosque's name. The grand prayer hall has the capacity to accommodate over 10,000 worshippers, a testament to its scale. It also serves as the final resting place for several rulers of the Asaf Jahi dynasty (Nizams), whose tombs are housed in a courtyard on the southern side, cementing its profound historical and religious significance in Hyderabad.:

How to Reach

By Air: From Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD), the mosque is approximately 25 KMs away. Take an app-based cab or pre-paid taxi towards Charminar. Due to the extreme congestion in the Old City, you will be dropped off a few hundred meters away and must walk to the mosque. Travel time is around 1 hour.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Nampally Railway Station (HYB), about 5 KMs away. Kacheguda Railway Station (KCG) is about 6 KMs away. An auto-rickshaw or cab should take you to the Charminar periphery, followed by a short walk or cycle-rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes.

By Road (Bus and Private Vehicle): Local TSRTC buses serve the Charminar area. Personal vehicles are strongly discouraged due to the traffic and difficulty in finding parking near the mosque. Visitors must rely on walking or local transport for the final approach.

By Local Transport (Metro and Cabs/Autos): The most convenient metro station is Charminar Metro Station (on the Green Line), which is about 1 KM walk from the mosque. Cycle-rickshaws are the traditional and easiest way to navigate the final crowded, narrow lanes to the mosque's entrance. :
