How To Reach Sirarakhong Waiting Shed

Ukhrul, Manipur, India
Historical and Cultural Context of Sirarakhong Village: The Sirarakhong Waiting Shed is a simple yet significant structure located at the heart of Sirarakhong village, serving as a functional stop for local transport and a community gathering point. The village itself, also known as Kampha, is one o f the early Tangkhul Naga settlements to embrace Christianity and is known for its high literacy rate (over 95%). The shed, while minor in size, is highly symbolic, representing the gateway to a village that has achieved global recognition for its unique agricultural product. The Fame of Hathei Chilli: The village is the exclusive home and cultivator of the Sirarakhong Hathei Chilli, a highly sought-after local chili variety. This unique chilli was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) status tag by the Government of India in September 2021, confirming its distinct qualities are attributable solely to the region. The chilli is revered by the locals, with its cultivation being the primary source of income and holding deep cultural importance, often referenced in traditional songs as a "red cover" enveloping the hills. Function and Community Role: The shed's primary purpose is practical—providing shelter for villagers waiting for shared taxis to Ukhrul town or other nearby settlements. More importantly, it acts as an informal social hub where villagers exchange news, market information (especially about the chilli crop), and discuss community affairs, making it a critical, albeit low-key, piece of local infrastructure. It is often the first and last point of interest for visitors coming to buy the famous chillies.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Imphal International Airport (IMF), approximately 140-145 KM away. From the airport, a taxi or shared sumo must be taken to Ukhrul town (3-4 hours). From Ukhrul, a local shared taxi (available near the Gandhi Circle area) or a hired private cab is needed for the 35-40 KM journey to Sirarakhong village, which takes another 1. 5 to 2 hours.

By Train: The nearest major railhead is Dimapur Railway Station (DMV) in Nagaland (350 KM). From Dimapur, travelers take a bus or hired taxi to Ukhrul (9-10 hours). The last leg to the village is only possible via local shared or private transport from Ukhrul town.

By Road: The village is located approximately 35-40 KM from Ukhrul town. It is connected by a motorable road, which is often a detour off the main Imphal-Ukhrul highway. Shared transport (local jeeps or sumos) specifically plying the Sirarakhong route departs from Ukhrul regularly. Travelers must ask for the vehicle going to Kampha (the village's local name) or Sirarakhong. The drive is scenic but requires an experienced local driver.

By Local Transport: The Sirarakhong Waiting Shed is the exact endpoint for the shared local transport that runs between the village and Ukhrul town. These shared sumos/jeeps are the most economical and common way to reach the village, taking up to two hours one way.
