How To Reach Thangassery Light House

Kollam , Kerala, India
The Thangassery Light House stands as a towering, striped sentinel over the Arabian Sea, representing a significant piece of Kollam's colonial and maritime heritage. At an impressive height of over 42 meters (138 feet), it is one of the tallest lighthouses on the Kerala coast and an unmissable landm ark. The current structure, which replaced an earlier beacon, was completed by the British in 1902, though records indicate a beacon has existed at this location since 18th century. The lighthouse is characterized by its distinctive red and white bands and the powerful lamp at the top, which can be seen for miles. The area around the lighthouse, known as Thangassery, was historically a major trading and military post for the Portuguese, the Dutch, and finally the British, leading to a wealth of colonial history encapsulated within a small coastal village. Visiting the lighthouse involves a climb of around 200 winding steps, but the reward is a breathtaking, 360-degree panoramic view of the Kollam city, the vast expanse of the Arabian Sea, the surrounding fishing villages, and the entry point of the Ashtamudi Lake system. This vantage point offers a unique perspective on the city's geographical layout, showing the transition from the bustling urban center to the tranquil backwaters and the open ocean. It is a site of both architectural importance and immense scenic beauty, attracting history enthusiasts and sightseers alike. The atmosphere is generally quiet and reflective, allowing visitors to ponder the countless ships and historical events the towering beacon has silently witnessed over the past century. Its light remains fully functional, guiding mariners to safety, making it a living, historical monument and an active part of India's coastal infrastructure.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport (TRV), located approximately 70 KMS south. From TRV, the easiest way to reach Thangassery is by pre-paid taxi or hired cab, which takes around 2 hours. The route is direct along NH66, and the final few kilometers involve turning off the main highway and navigating through the local city and village roads to the coast.

By Train: Kollam Junction Railway Station (QLN) is the main railway station, located only about 4 KMS from the lighthouse. Kollam is a well-connected major stop on the Indian railway network. From QLN, travelers can easily hire a pre-paid auto-rickshaw (tuks-tuk) or a taxi. The ride to the lighthouse takes about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on local traffic, and is an inexpensive and straightforward journey.

By Road: The lighthouse is accessible via well-maintained city roads that branch off the main NH66. Kollam is served by an extensive network of state and private buses. The main KSRTC bus station is a short auto-rickshaw ride away. Driving to the location is simple, and there is usually sufficient parking available near the lighthouse compound for private vehicles, often for a small, nominal fee. The local roads leading into Thangassery are relatively narrow but well-signed.

By Local Transport: Auto-rickshaws are the primary mode of local transport within Kollam and are the most convenient way to reach the lighthouse from the city center, hotels, or the railway station. Fares should be confirmed with the driver beforehand. Local city buses also service the Thangassery area, making it a very economical choice, though buses may stop a short walking distance from the actual lighthouse compound. Walking is also feasible from the closest parts of the main city center, taking around 45 minutes.
