Kalakkadu Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve

Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu., India
The Kalakkadu Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) is a jewel of the Western Ghats and the second-largest protected area in Tamil Nadu. It was formed by merging two existing sanctuaries to create a massive corridor for the endangered Bengal Tiger. The reserve is a global biodiversity hotspot, home to a staggering variety of plants, animals, and birds. It is often called the "River Sanctuary" because it is the catchment area for 14 perennial rivers, including the Thamirabarani. The landscape varies from tropical wet evergreen forests to dry deciduous scrub, providing diverse niches for wildlife. Apart from tigers, the reserve is a stronghold for the Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, and leopards. The dense canopy and rugged terrain make it a paradise for trekkers and researchers alike. Several dams like Papanasam and Servalar are located within its boundaries, creating vast reservoirs that support aquatic life. The reserve is also culturally significant, housing ancient temples and tribal settlements of the Kani tribe. Conservation efforts here are rigorous, focusing on protecting the core zone from human interference. The buffer zone allows for regulated eco-tourism, where visitors can experience the raw beauty of the jungle. The air is crisp, and the soundscape is dominated by the calls of cicadas and birds. KMTR is essential for the water security of three southern districts, making its preservation a top priority. The trekking trails offer breathtaking views of the peaks and valleys of the Agasthyamalai range. It is a place where nature reigns supreme, offering a glimpse into the primordial wilderness of India. The reserve’s commitment to "Project Tiger" has seen a steady management of the feline population. It stands as a monumental example of successful forest conservation.
