Koonthakulam Bird Sanctuary

Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, India
Natural Heritage: Koonthakulam Bird Sanctuary is the largest reserve for breeding water birds in South India and a recognized Ramsar Site. Spanning over 1.29 square kilometers, it is a man-made wetland consisting of two irrigation tanks, Koonthakulam and Kadankulam. What makes this place truly speci al is the deep bond between the villagers and the birds. For centuries, the local community has protected these winged visitors, viewing them as harbingers of good luck and prosperity. The birds nest on the trees right in the backyards of the houses, and the villagers even avoid bursting crackers during festivals like Diwali to prevent disturbing them. More than 43 species of migratory birds from countries like Siberia and Central Asia visit this sanctuary every year. The sanctuary is not just a treat for birdwatchers but also a shining example of community-led conservation. It provides a serene escape into nature, where the air is filled with the constant chirping of thousands of birds.
