Pazhani Murugan Temple

Dindigul, Tamil Nadu., India
Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, popularly known as Pazhani Murugan Temple, is one of the Arupadai Veedu (six abodes) of Lord Murugan. It is situated on the Sivagiri hill and is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. The temple is steeped in legend, specifically the story of the d ivine fruit for which Lord Muruga left Kailash and settled on this hill. The main deity, Lord Muruga, is depicted as an ascetic (Andi) holding a staff (Dhandam). The idol is unique because it was created by the Siddhar Bogar using an amalgam of nine poisonous substances known as Navapashanam, which together form a powerful medicine. Millions of devotees visit the temple, many of them trekking on foot as part of a vow. The temple is famous for its Panchamirtham, a sweet prasadam that has received a GI tag. Reaching the hilltop involves climbing 689 steps, but modern facilities like a rope car and winch are also available. The spiritual vibration of the temple, combined with the panoramic view of the surrounding plains and the Western Ghats, makes it a soul-stirring experience for every visitor.
