Kattabomman Memorial Fort
Historical Context: The Kattabomman Memorial Fort was built by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1974 to honor the legendary freedom fighter Veerapandiya Kattabomman. The original mud fort was destroyed by the British in the late 18th century after a fierce battle. The current structure is a beautiful memorial built on the site where the great warrior once ruled his kingdom. Inside the fort, there is a gallery of paintings and artifacts that depict the life, struggle, and eventual execution of Kattabomman. He was one of the first Indian rulers to refuse to pay taxes to the British East India Company, sparking a major rebellion.
