Keibul Lamjao National Park

Imphal, Manipur, India
Keibul Lamjao National Park is a world-renowned ecological marvel located on the Loktak Lake in Manipur. It is famous for being the only floating national park on Earth. The park is characterized by its unique floating islands of vegetation known as Phumdis. These phumdis are composed of a thick ma ss of soil, organic matter, and vegetation that float on the lake surface. The park was established in 1977 primarily to protect the endangered Sangai deer, also known as the "Dancing Deer" of Manipur. This species is found nowhere else in the wild. The park covers an area of about 40 square kilometers and is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Besides the Sangai, it is home to hog deer, wild boars, and various migratory birds. The ecosystem is fragile and requires constant conservation efforts. Visitors can explore the park via boat rides through the labyrinthine channels between the phumdis.
