Lake Badi View Point

Udaipur, Rajasthan, India
Lake Badi, originally named Jiyan Sagar, is an artificial freshwater lake located in the village of Badi, about 12 KMS from Udaipur city. It was constructed between 1652 and 1680 by Maharana Raj Singh I, who named it after his mother, Jana Devi. The primary purpose of its construction was to counter act the devastating effects of famine and drought that plagued the region, ensuring a stable water supply for the local population. The lake covers a significant area, estimated to be around 155 sq. km, although this measurement can vary. The lake is known for its relatively untouched and tranquil environment, offering a peaceful escape from the main city?s tourist crowds. The area is devoid of heavy commercialization, providing a serene expanse of water surrounded by the rugged Aravalli mountains. The main attraction for visitors, however, is the Lake Badi View Point, popularly known as Bahubali Hill. This nearby hilltop is the vantage point from which visitors can witness breathtaking panoramic views of the sprawling Lake Badi, the surrounding hills, and the distant Sajjangarh Palace. Reaching the summit of Bahubali Hill involves a short, gentle trek or hike of about 10-15 minutes from the parking area. The effort is immensely rewarding, offering one of the most stunning 360-degree views in the Udaipur region. The view point is particularly famous for its spectacular sunrise and sunset vistas, where the sky changes color dramatically over the peaceful lake and the undulating hills. The tranquil beauty and photographic opportunities at the viewpoint have made it a highly essential inclusion on any Udaipur itinerary for nature lovers and trekkers.

Local Mela (Fair) during Religious Festivals:Occasionally, the local village of Badi may host a small mela or community fair near the lake during significant local festivals, often religious or harvest-related. These are purely local events, offering a genuine glimpse into the village life of the Aravalli region. They are not held on a fixed schedule but are worth experiencing if your visit coincides.

Adventure Group Hikes/Treks:Due to the popularity of Bahubali Hill, various local adventure and fitness groups organize special group hikes, often starting very early in the morning to catch the Sunrise. These events provide a social and guided way to experience the trek and are usually advertised locally in Udaipur.

Monsoon Tourism Drives:While not a 'special event' in the traditional sense, the period immediately following heavy Monsoon rains often sees a spontaneous spike in local visitors who flock to the lake to witness the fully filled reservoir and the lush green hills. This rush creates a temporary, vibrant, and enthusiastic atmosphere for a few weeks in August or September.

Bahubali Hill Summit View:The absolute best spot is the summit of Bahubali Hill. Frame the vast expanse of Lake Badi with the undulating Aravalli hills in the background. The best time is during the Golden Hour (shortly after Sunrise or just before Sunset) to capture the deep shadows and warm, saturated colors.

Silhouette Shots at Sunset:Use the dramatic backdrop of the Sunset to take striking silhouette photos. Have a person or a couple stand against the brightly lit sky at the hill's edge, capturing their outline with the colorful sunset as the backdrop.

Reflections on the Water:Photograph the calm water of Lake Badi from the embankment level. Aim to capture the clear reflection of the sky, the surrounding hills, or the Sajjangarh Palace (if visible) on the still surface of the lake, especially on a windless day.

The Historical Chhatris:The three artistic chhatris along the embankment are excellent subjects for architectural and landscape photography. Frame a chhatri against the backdrop of the lake, using its elegant stone structure to provide a foreground subject with historical context.

A Historical Water Reservoir:Lake Badi itself is a marvelous feat of historical civil engineering. Built in the 17th century, its construction reflects the Mewar rulers' foresight in water management and their commitment to public welfare. The dam structure and embankments were designed to hold vast quantities of water, acting as a crucial lifeline against famine. The sheer scale and volume of the lake demonstrate the architectural planning required for such a large-scale, life-saving project.

The Chhatris (Kiosks/Pavilions):Along the embankments of the lake, visitors can find three artistic chhatris. These are small, elevated, dome-shaped pavilions, a characteristic element of Rajasthani architecture. They were originally built for the royalty or as resting spots. Made of stone, they offer shaded areas for relaxation and add an element of artistic heritage to the otherwise natural landscape. Their simple, elegant design highlights the blend of utility and aesthetics in the regional architecture.

NatureRs.s Viewing Platform:Bahubali Hill is a natural geological feature, not a constructed architectural marvel. Its 'architecture' lies in its natural formRs.a rocky outcrop that provides the perfect, high-altitude viewing angle. The short, winding path to the summit, though made functional by local efforts for trekking, integrates seamlessly with the natural terrain. The absence of heavy construction at the top preserves the raw, natural aesthetic, making the panoramic view the star attraction.
