This ancient and sacred Ashram is situated amidst dense forests on the banks of the holy Mandakini River, a tributary of the Tamas? River. It is the legendary residence of Maharishi Atri, one of the seven great sages (Saptarishis), and his devoted wife, Sati Anusuya. According to the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshman visited this Ashram during their exile, and Sita received lessons on Pativrata Dharma (duty to one's husband) from Sati Anusuya. The Ashram is also the site where Sati Anusuya is believed to have performed severe penance (Tapasya) to bring the River Mandakini to earth, ending a long-standing drought in the region.
