The Kalakkadu Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) is a jewel of the Western Ghats and the second-largest protected area in Tamil Nadu. It was formed by merging two existing sanctuaries to create a massive corridor for the endangered Bengal Tiger. The reserve is a global biodiversity hotspot, home to a staggering variety of plants, animals, and birds. It is often called the "River Sanctuary" because it is the catchment area for 14 perennial rivers, including the Thamirabarani.
