The Colossal Shakyamuni Buddha Statue: The monastery's most impressive architectural and artistic feature is the 39-foot (12-meter) tall copper statue of the seated Shakyamuni Buddha, which is heavily gilded with gold. This statue fills the main Du-khang and is the second largest of its kind in Ladakh. The statue was commissioned by King Deldan Namgyal in memory of his father, Senge Namgyal.
Dimension and Layout: The palace complex occupies a prominent ridge, featuring the main palace/monastery building (approx. 30m x 20m footprint) on the highest point, facing the Indus River. The Du-khang is a high-ceilinged chamber designed specifically to house the massive Buddha statue.
