Shopping Markets In Shimla
General information
Lakkar Bazaar
Lakkar Bazaar, whose name literally means 'Wood Market' (Lakkar is Hindi for wood), is a historical shopping street situated near The Ridge and is a key commercial artery of Shimla. It is primarily famous for its exquisite array of wooden articles. The market was originally established by a community of Sikh carpenters from Hoshiarpur, who settled in the area and began crafting items from the abundant local woods like Deodar and Walnut. Today, shoppers can find everything from intricately carved wooden walking sticks (a local specialty) and toys to small furniture pieces, utensils, and souvenirs. Beyond wood, the bazaar also hosts shops selling warm Kullu shawls, handmade woolens, traditional handicrafts, and artificial jewelry. The bazaar acts as the starting point for the trek up to Jakhoo Hill and is also home to the city's skating rink. It is a bustling, colorful, pedestrian-only area that provides a vibrant contrast to the more colonial feel of Mall Road.
Location: Located at the eastern end of The Ridge. Distance from City Center: 0.8 KMS (from The Ridge).
Timing: @@Regular Timings: The market is generally open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM on all days of the week. Shops begin closing down after 7:00 PM. Check individual shop timings for any variations. @@Ideal Visit Time: Late Afternoon (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM) is the best time when the market is at its liveliest with maximum foot traffic, and the light is good for browsing and photos. Early Morning is best for a quiet, clean photo opportunity before the crowds arrive. The market is functional year-round.

Tourism Tips
@@Health & Safety: Always carry a basic medical kit and be aware that the steep climb can sometimes cause breathlessness for those not used to the altitude. Monkeys at Jakhoo Temple can be aggressive, so avoid carrying plastic bags or food items openly in your hands while walking. @@Packing Essentials: Even in summers, carry light woolens as the temperature can drop significantly after sunset or during a sudden rain shower. For winter visits, heavy jackets, thermal wear, gloves, and waterproof boots are essential to stay warm and dry during snowfall. @@Accommodation: Shimla offers a wide range of stay options from luxury heritage hotels like The Oberoi Cecil to budget guesthouses in the Lower Bazaar. It is advisable to book in advance during peak months like May, June, and December to get the best rates. @@Local Conduct: Respect the local culture by dressing modestly when visiting temples and avoid littering in the pristine mountain environment. Shimla has a strict no-smoking and no-plastic policy on Mall Road, and violators are fined heavily to maintain the city's cleanliness.
