Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India
Details: Thotlakonda is a significant archaeological site that dates back to the 2nd century BCE. Located on a hill overlooking the Bay of Bengal, it was a flourishing Hinayana Buddhist monastery for over 400 years. The name Thotlakonda is derived from the Telugu words 'Thotti' (Cistern) and 'Konda' (Hill), referring to the numerous rock-cut water cisterns found on the hillock that were used to store rainwater for the monks. The site was discovered by the Indian Navy during an aerial survey in 1976. Subsequent excavations by the State Archaeology Department revealed a grand layout of stupas, chaityas, and viharas. It served as a major center of learning and a vital link in the maritime trade between the Kalinga region and Southeast Asian countries like Sri Lanka and Burma. Standing among the ruins today, one can feel the spiritual silence that once attracted hundreds of monks. The panoramic view of the turquoise sea meeting the golden coastline from this height is unparalleled. Unlike other tourist spots, Thotlakonda is a place for quiet reflection, offering a glimpse into the simple yet organized life of the ancient Buddhist community. The site is a protected monument and remains one of the best-preserved examples of maritime Buddhism in the world.
