Siddavatam Fort

Yaganti, Andhra Pradesh, India
Siddavatam Fort, also known as Sidhout Fort, is a massive structure located on the banks of the Pennar River. Covering over 30 acres, this fort was originally built as a mud fort in 1303 AD by the Matti Rajas and was later converted into a formidable rock fortress. Because it sits at the entrance t o the holy region of Srisailam, it is often called the "Gateway to Dakshina Kasi." The fort has changed hands many times, passing from the Vijayanagara Empire to the Nawabs of Kadapa, and eventually to Hyder Ali and the British. The architecture is a stunning display of defensive engineering, featuring massive gateways and high bastions that have survived centuries of floods and wars. Inside the fort walls, you will find several ancient temples like the Ranganatha Swamy Temple and the Siddeswara Swamy Temple, which add a spiritual dimension to the military site. The location is uniquely scenic, with the river flowing right beside the fort walls, providing a natural moat. Walking through its gateways, one can see intricate carvings and massive pillars that speak of its former glory. It is a perfect spot for those who love exploring off-the-beaten-path historical sites in rural India.
