Travel Tips Of Chanderi Fort

Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, India
History & Significance: The Chanderi Fort, also known as Kirti Durg (Fort of Glory), is the most dominant structure in the region, built by the Gurjara-Pratihara King Kirtipal in the 11th century after he shifted his capital from Buddhi Chanderi. Its strategic location on a hill, 71 meters above the town, made it a prized possession, standing at the crossroads of Malwa and Bundelkhand and controlling crucial trade routes. It was rebuilt and expanded over the centuries by the Khiljis, the Bundelas, and others. The Fort is most famously associated with the 1528 CE siege by the Mughal Emperor Babur against the Rajput ruler Medini Rai. After a fierce battle, the Rajputs were defeated, and the women of the fort performed Jauhar (mass self-immolation) to protect their honor. The fort complex contains several structures, including the Navkhanda Palace, a mosque, the Johar Smarak, and the infamous Khooni Darwaza (Blood Gate), all of which bear testimony to the fort's long, bloody, and important history. Today, it offers the most panoramic views of Chanderi.
