Darya Khan's Tomb

Mandu, Madhya Pradesh, India
Darya Khan's Tomb is a massive and impressive structure dedicated to a high-ranking official or noble in the court of Mahmud Khilji. Built in the late 15th century, it stands out because of its use of red sandstone, which glows beautifully during the golden hour. The tomb is part of a larger comple x that includes a mosque, a sarai (inn), and a water tank called Somvati Kund. Unlike many other tombs in Mandu that are made of rubble and plaster, this one showcases fine masonry. The central dome is surrounded by smaller domes at the corners, creating a rhythmic architectural silhouette. Darya Khan was a prominent figure, and the scale of his tomb reflects his influence. The interior is spacious and features a series of arches that create a sense of grandiosity. It is one of the best-preserved monuments in the central group of Mandu, offering a deep dive into the military and administrative history of the Malwa Sultanate.
