Travel Tips Of Dubdi Monastery

Pelling, Sikkim, India
Introduction and History: Dubdi Monastery, also known as Yuksom Monastery, holds immense historical and spiritual significance as it is considered the first monastery established in Sikkim after the consecration of the first Chogyal (King) of Sikkim in 1642. Established in 1701 (though its foundatio n is linked to the 17th century), it is one of the oldest monasteries in the state, founded by Lama Lhatsun Chempo. The word 'Dubdi' literally translates to 'The Retreat,' which is fitting for its isolated location on a forested hilltop. Spiritual and Cultural Significance: The monastery is a two-storey stone structure that embodies the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It serves as a sacred pilgrimage site and a symbol of the history of the Namgyal dynasty. Its architecture and collection of religious artifacts provide a deep insight into the early Buddhist influence on the region. The approach to the monastery involves a 3-4 KMS uphill trek from Yuksom, making the visit a spiritual journey in itself, culminating in a peaceful, serene environment away from the village noise. It houses images of various divinities and saints.

Tourism Tips

Health and Safety: The trek is moderately challenging. Carry a sturdy trekking pole and sufficient drinking water. Start the trek early to avoid the afternoon heat and ensure enough time for the return journey before sunset. Always hire a reliable local guide from Yuksom.

Packing Essentials: Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Carry warm layers, as the hilltop can be windy and chilly. A small backpack for water, snacks, and a camera is essential.

Accommodation:

Accommodation is available in Yuksom, the base town, ranging from homestays to small hotels. Book your stay in advance, as options are more limited than in Pelling.

Monastery Etiquette: Dress modestly (cover shoulders and legs). Remove shoes before entering the prayer hall. Maintain silence and avoid disturbing the monks during their prayers or activities. Ask for permission before taking close-up photos of monks.
