Travel Tips Of Dudhawa Dam

Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh, India
Historical Context and Construction: Dudhawa Dam is an important historical and engineering marvel built across the great Mahanadi River. Its construction began in 1953 and was completed in 1964. It is primarily an earthen dam built for irrigation and drinking water supply to the surrounding region. It is one of the key dams in the catchment area of the Mahanadi and plays a crucial role in the agricultural prosperity of the Dhamtari and Kanker districts. While geographically spanning the border of Dhamtari and Kanker districts, it is administered and primarily accessed via the Nagari block route of Dhamtari. The Ancient Shiva Temple: The most distinct feature of the dam is the ancient 6th Century Lord Shiva Temple located in the middle of the reservoir. This temple is usually submerged when the dam is full, but it becomes accessible when the water level recedes (typically during the summer months or drier periods). This submerged/re-emerging temple adds a significant spiritual and historical dimension to the site, drawing both devotees and history enthusiasts. Natural and Recreational Appeal: The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense forests, hills, and the vast, tranquil water body, making it a beautiful picnic and nature spot. The serene atmosphere, combined with facilities for fishing, boating, and a floating restaurant/café (seasonal), makes it a unique tourist destination, attracting visitors who prefer a quieter, nature-focused experience compared to the more commercialized Gangrel Dam.

Tourism Tips

Health & Safety: Since the location is remote, carry a fully charged mobile phone (though network coverage can be patchy) and a basic first-aid kit, especially for forest walks. If accessing the exposed temple, be cautious of the slippery, uneven ground. Always inform the local guide or park staff if venturing off the main track.

Packing Essentials: For the forested surroundings, wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. Carry mosquito repellent, particularly for the morning/evening visits. Pack binoculars for birdwatching. If visiting in the summer, carry plenty of fluids, electrolytes, and light clothing.

Accommodation:

Accommodation options are very limited near the dam site itself. The best option is to stay in Dhamtari or at the resorts near Gangrel Dam and plan a day trip to Dudhawa. Budget stays might be available in the nearby town of Nagari.

Other Tips: Hire a reliable local Guide in the Nagari area, as the dam is in a remote location and combined with a visit to the Sitanadi Sanctuary or Sihawa. Respect the environment and wildlife, as the area is adjacent to a major reserve. Carry snacks as food options near the dam are basic.
