How To Reach Dudhawa Dam

Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh, India
Historical Context and Construction: Dudhawa Dam is an important historical and engineering marvel built across the great Mahanadi River. Its construction began in 1953 and was completed in 1964. It is primarily an earthen dam built for irrigation and drinking water supply to the surrounding region. It is one of the key dams in the catchment area of the Mahanadi and plays a crucial role in the agricultural prosperity of the Dhamtari and Kanker districts. While geographically spanning the border of Dhamtari and Kanker districts, it is administered and primarily accessed via the Nagari block route of Dhamtari. The Ancient Shiva Temple: The most distinct feature of the dam is the ancient 6th Century Lord Shiva Temple located in the middle of the reservoir. This temple is usually submerged when the dam is full, but it becomes accessible when the water level recedes (typically during the summer months or drier periods). This submerged/re-emerging temple adds a significant spiritual and historical dimension to the site, drawing both devotees and history enthusiasts. Natural and Recreational Appeal: The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense forests, hills, and the vast, tranquil water body, making it a beautiful picnic and nature spot. The serene atmosphere, combined with facilities for fishing, boating, and a floating restaurant/café (seasonal), makes it a unique tourist destination, attracting visitors who prefer a quieter, nature-focused experience compared to the more commercialized Gangrel Dam.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport, Raipur (RPR), approximately 150-160 KMS away from the dam site. After flying to Raipur, the journey requires hiring a private taxi or taking a bus to Dhamtari, and then a further 75-80 KMS drive towards the Nagari block to reach Dudhawa Village.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Raipur Junction (R), about 150 KMS away. Direct trains connect Raipur to all major Indian cities. From the station, the most convenient option is a private cab to the dam site. Alternatively, one can travel to Dhamtari (less convenient rail link) and then take a bus or taxi.

By Road: Dudhawa Dam is located in the Nagari block. It is well-connected by State Highways from both Dhamtari (approx. 75-80 KMS) and Kanker (approx. 29 KMS). The dam is located off the main road to Sihawa. Hiring a private car or taxi from Dhamtari is the most recommended way to reach the site due to the distance and the remote location. Buses are available but have limited frequency and may drop you some distance from the actual spot.

By Local Transport: From Dhamtari or the nearest town of Nagari, a local taxi or shared jeep (jeep-taxi) is the only viable local transport option for the last few kilometers, as auto-rickshaws are generally unavailable for this long distance. Confirm the return trip arrangement with the driver.
