The Arbuda Devi Cave, often more famously known as the Adhar Devi Temple, is one of the most sacred and ancient religious sites in Mount Abu. This Hindu temple is dedicated to Goddess Arbuda, who is considered a form of Goddess Durga (specifically Maa Katyayani). The name Adhar Devi originates from a powerful legend: it is believed that the Adhar (lips) of Mata Sati's body fell at this spot, making it one of the Shakti Peethas (though not one of the major 51). The temple is built inside a natural rock cave, adding an element of mystique and challenge to the pilgrimage. To reach the cave shrine, devotees and visitors must climb a steep flight of 365 stairs, each step often said to represent a day of the year. The final part of the darshan involves crawling through a small, narrow opening in the rock to reach the inner sanctum where the idol is placed, giving a strong sense of entering a womb. The goddess's idol is a beautiful black granite life-size figure.
