The Moat's Stone Paving:Close-up shots of the ancient, intricately laid stone blocks of the moat's walls and paving, often overgrown with moss, provide an excellent texture and historical detail.
The Aerial View from the Stadium Stand:If access is available (or from the top of the earthen mound), the best view of the entire fort layout, including the moat, the gate, and the adjacent Barabati Stadium ellipse, is available, offering a great perspective of the scale of the ruins.
Contrasting Temple and Ruin:A photo that captures the modern Barabati Temple (Goddess Barabati shrine) standing next to the ancient ruins highlights the transition of time and the continuity of religious practice at the site. (Approx. )Photo Gallery

Its strategic location at the confluence of two rivers made it an impregnable military base and a hub for trade, signifying the political and military might of the regional dynasties like the Eastern Gangas.
The Nine-Storied Palace Legend:The fort is renowned for the legend of its magnificent nine-storied palace (Navatala), though only ruins remain. This palace symbolized the opulence and power of the rulers, making the site famous even in its ruined state. The fort also gave its name to the nearby Barabati Stadium, a major sporting venue in Odisha.
National Monument Status:It has been declared a protected site by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) since 1915, recognizing its profound national importance as a monument that encapsulates the history of rule, war, and cultural transition in Odisha. -

The most prominent feature is the defensive wall and the large, stone-paved moat that surrounds it. The moat varies in width, being about 10 meters to 20 meters wide, once filled with water for protection.
The Arched Gateway:The single, grand arched gateway is the most well-preserved architectural element, built of stone, and still standing as the majestic main entrance. It is a fine example of the medieval military architecture of the region.
Nine-Storied Palace Ruins (Navatala):Excavations have revealed the foundation and a high mound of what was once believed to be a magnificent nine-storied palace (Navatala Prasad). The structures were built using locally sourced Khondalite and laterite stone blocks, resting on a carefully prepared foundation of sand and lime mixture. Remains of several pillared structures (some up to 32 pillars were found) indicate the grand scale of the original palatial complex, which was sadly destroyed over time. -
