Entry Permit: A mandatory permit to enter Lakshadweep and Agatti costs approximately Rs.1,500 per person onwards, which must be obtained in advance.
Water Sports and Equipment: Activities like Scuba Diving cost around Rs.3,500 per person for a single dive, with courses costing more. Snorkeling gear rental is typically Rs.500 to Rs.1,200 per person. Glass-bottom boat rides can be around Rs.1,500 per trip. These fees cover equipment, boat service, and the essential presence of trained guides who ensure safety and minimal impact on the fragile ecosystem.
Conservation Contribution: A portion of the fees collected by organized tours often goes towards local conservation and waste management initiatives, effectively acting as an indirect conservation levy, funding the protection and restoration of the very reefs you are visiting.Timing:

Ideal Visit Time: The best time for snorkeling or scuba diving is generally in the late morning (9:00 AM to 12:00 PM) when the sun is high and water visibility is at its maximum, offering the most vibrant view of the coral colours. Late afternoon dives (2:00 PM to 4:00 PM) can also be spectacular for the way the sun filters through the water.
Avoid Monsoon Operations: During the Monsoon season (June to September), most water sports are suspended due to rough seas, strong currents, and low underwater visibility, making it an unsuitable time for reef exploration.
Low Tide Opportunities: Experienced local guides may offer unique low-tide reef walks on specific days, typically in the early morning or late afternoon, allowing a temporary, close-up inspection of the intertidal zone and exposed coral heads, but this requires great care to avoid damaging the exposed marine life.Special Events:

Local Fishing Festivals: Occasionally, traditional fishing festivals are held where the community celebrates a successful fishing season, which often features demonstrations of age-old, sustainable fishing techniques that have protected the reef for centuries.
Educational Field Trips: Educational events involving local students and tourists are sometimes organized, including low-tide reef walks led by marine experts to observe the intertidal zone, which provides a close-up look at the organisms and structure of the reef base.Best Photo Spots:
The Coral Wall Drop-Off: The outer edge of the reef, where the shallow lagoon meets the deep ocean, provides a dramatic contrast and is the best spot for wide-angle shots of the reef's steep vertical profile, often featuring passing pelagic fish. The Coral Wall Drop-Off: The outer edge of the reef, where the shallow lagoon meets the deep ocean, provides a dramatic contrast and is the best spot for wide-angle shots of the reef's steep vertical profile, often featuring passing pelagic fish.
Shallow Lagoon Sunbeams: In the mid-morning (10:00 AM to 1:00 PM) on a sunny day, the sunbeams piercing the shallow, clear lagoon water above the coral gardens create a magnificent, ethereal effect, perfect for bright, well-lit underwater photography.
Near the Turtle Nesting Sites: Certain calm, remote areas of the reef near known turtle feeding grounds offer a good chance to photograph or film the rare sea turtles (Hawksbill and Green) gliding gracefully over the coral beds in their natural habitat.
Underwater Macro Spots: Areas with dense brain and plate corals are excellent for macro photography, focusing on the small, intricate details of the coral polyps, nudibranchs, and colourful reef snails.Photo Gallery
Things To Do
-
Explore the Underwater World: Go Scuba Diving or Snorkeling to directly witness the vibrant coral gardens and marine animals. You can arrange introductory dives or PADI courses for more extensive exploration.
Glass-Bottom Boat Tours: For non-swimmers, take a glass-bottom boat ride over the shallow reef sections to observe the corals and fish without getting wet. These tours offer excellent visibility of the underwater landscape.
Attend a Marine Education Session: Participate in a local marine awareness or conservation workshop conducted by local NGOs or the Fisheries Department to understand the ecosystem's fragility and the sustainable practices employed by the islanders.
Underwater Photography/Videography: The clear water and colourful marine life provide fantas...

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving Paradise: They are a prime location for scuba diving and snorkeling due to the high visibility of the turquoise lagoon waters. The abundance of vibrant, multicoloured coral fish and healthy coral formations makes for an exceptional underwater viewing experience that attracts adventurers worldwide.
Supporting Local Livelihood: The reefs are fundamental to the island's culture and the fishing industry, providing a reliable source of protein and income for the majority of the population through traditional, sustainable fishing methods. -

The atoll structure of Agatti itself is entirely coral-based, resting on a submerged volcanic peak. They create a protected lagoon and a steep ocean drop-off.
Coral Diversity and Dimension: Over 100 species of coral exist, including notable branched staghorn and ridged brain corals. The reef area, including the lagoon, covers a substantial zone around Agatti Atoll, though the exact dimensions vary, forming a barrier several kilometers long that protects the island from ocean swells. The shallow lagoon depths range from 1 to 12 meters, ideal for sunlight penetration, which supports the symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) essential for coral health.
Conservation Architecture: Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) act as informal protected zones, like a 500-acre area near Agatti, designed to give the ecosystem a chance to recover from damage caused by climate change and human activity. -
How To Reach:
By Air: Fly to Agatti Aerodrome (AGX) via Kochi International Airport (COK) in Kerala, which is the only airport in Lakshadweep. The flight is about 90 minutes. From the airport, local transport or resort vehicles take you to the beach area and dive centers. -

Tourism Tips
-
Health & safety: Always use certified local guides for all water sports, especially scuba diving, and never dive or snorkel alone. Be aware of tidal currents. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the fragile coral ecosystem. Carry a basic first-aid kit.
