Dehing Patkai National Park

Digboi, Assam, India
Dehing Patkai National Park is the only lowland rainforest in India, spanning across the districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. This lush green expanse is a part of the larger Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve and was recently upgraded to a National Park to protect its immense biodiversity. The forest i s characterized by a four-layered structure, with towering Hollong trees—the state tree of Assam—reaching heights of over 50 meters. It is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, housing rare species such as the Clouded Leopard, Hoolock Gibbon, and the Malayan Sun Bear. The park is also famous for its high concentration of wild cats, including the Marbled Cat and the Golden Cat. The Dehing River flows through the forest, providing a perennial water source and adding to the scenic beauty of the landscape. For birdwatchers, the park is a paradise with over 290 species recorded, including the White-winged Wood Duck, which is the state bird of Assam. The atmosphere inside the forest is ethereal, with thick canopies blocking most of the sunlight, creating a cool and humid microclimate even during the peak of summer. Walking through the forest trails, one can hear the rhythmic calls of the Hoolock Gibbons echoing through the trees. The park serves as a critical corridor for elephant migration and is a vital ecological lung for the entire North-East region. It offers an immersive experience into a primitive wilderness that feels untouched by time.
