Dhanushkodi
Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, India
Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town at the very tip of Pamban Island. It was once a bustling port and a significant entry point to India from Sri Lanka. However, it was devastated by a severe cyclone in 1964, which washed away the entire town, including a railway line and many houses, resulting in a t ragic loss of life. Today, it stands as a poignant reminder of nature's power and a place with a unique, desolate beauty. The remnants of the old town, including the skeletal remains of buildings, a church, and a railway station, can still be seen. Dhanushkodi is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. It is believed to be the place where Lord Rama, with his bow (dhanush), broke the Sethu (Rama Setu or Adam's Bridge) after his victory over Ravana. The drive to Dhanushkodi is scenic, passing through sand dunes and casuarina trees. The area is now being developed with better road access. The end point offers stunning views of the confluence of the two seas and the shallow waters extending towards Sri Lanka.
