The Thekkinkadu Maidan is a historic, expansive open ground covering approximately 65 acres right in the center of Thrissur City. Its name literally means "forest of teak trees" and it was historically a dense forest which was cleared and converted into the central public space by the great ruler, S akthan Thampuran (Rama Varma IX) of the Cochin Kingdom in the 18th century. This open space is absolutely vital to the city’s urban and cultural geography, as it is the epicenter of the famous Thrissur Pooram festival. The maidan encircles the ancient and sacred Vadakkumnathan Temple, a testament to its spiritual significance. The road that rings the maidan is the Swaraj Round, the city’s main commercial and administrative hub. The Maidan itself serves multiple purposes: it is a venue for massive political rallies, trade fairs, public events, and cultural gatherings throughout the year. Its creation by Sakthan Thampuran was a deliberate act of urban planning to foster a vibrant city center, a vision that continues today. Its historical importance is also cemented by the fact that many major national political figures, including former Prime Ministers, have delivered speeches here. The sheer size of the Maidan allows it to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of people who gather annually for the festival, making it the greatest open-air cultural arena in Kerala.
