Gandhi Setu Bridge

Vaishali, Bihar, India
The Mahatma Gandhi Setu, also known as the Ganga Setu, is one of the longest river bridges in India, stretching over 5.75 kilometers. It spans the mighty Ganga river, linking the state capital Patna to the district of Vaishali at Hajipur. Inaugurated in 1982 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, it serv ed as the longest bridge in the country for decades. For tourists, the bridge is not just a transport link but a spectacular viewpoint. From its height, one can see the vast expanse of the river, the bustling riverbanks, and the distant horizon. Recently, the bridge underwent a massive renovation where its concrete superstructure was replaced with a modern Steel Truss system, making it more durable and aesthetically striking. The view from the Hajipur side (the northern end) is particularly famous for sunset watchers and photographers who want to capture the scale of the Gangetic plains. :

The Gandhi Setu is a masterpiece of civil engineering.

Design: It was originally a cantilever segmental girder bridge but has been rehabilitated into a Steel Truss Bridge.

Dimensions: It consists of 45 intermediate spans of 121 meters each. The total length is 5,750 meters, and the width is 25 meters, accommodating four lanes of traffic.

Engineering Feat: The use of triangular steel trusses has reduced the weight of the superstructure significantly while increasing its load-bearing capacity. The bridge stands on massive concrete pillars that are deeply anchored into the riverbed to withstand the high current of the Ganga. The walking paths on either side provide a safe space for pedestrians to enjoy the breeze and the view without interrupting the flow of vehicles.
