Golden Temple
The Namdroling Monastery, popularly known as the Golden Temple, is one of the largest teaching centers of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in the world. Established in 1963 by His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche, it began as a small bamboo structure but has grown into a sprawling complex housin g over 5,000 monks and nuns. The monastery is situated in Bylakuppe, which is the second-largest Tibetan settlement outside Tibet. Visitors are greeted by a sense of profound peace as they enter the ornate gates. Inside the main prayer hall, three massive gold-plated statues tower over devotees: Buddha Shakyamuni, Guru Padmasambhava, and Buddha Amitayus. The walls are covered in intricate murals depicting Buddhist mythology and the path to enlightenment. It serves not just as a tourist spot but as a vital educational institution where monks study philosophy and meditation. The surrounding area is filled with smaller monasteries and local markets selling Tibetan handicrafts.
