Madikeri Fort & Palace

Coorg, Karnataka, India
Madikeri Fort is a historical landmark that stands as a testament to the turbulent and rich past of the Kodagu region. Originally built as a mud fort by King Mudduraja in the late 17th century, it was later rebuilt in stone by Tipu Sultan, who renamed it Jaffarabad. After the fall of Tipu, the Brit ish took over the fort and added various colonial structures. The fort complex is unique because it houses several diverse buildings: a palace, a chapel, a temple, and a museum. The palace, known as the Madikeri Palace, was renovated by the British and served as the administrative headquarters for many years. One of the most interesting features of the fort is the two life-size masonry elephants at the entrance. The fort offers a panoramic view of the entire Madikeri town and the surrounding emerald hills. Today, the museum inside (formerly a church) houses a fascinating collection of historical artifacts, weapons, and royal memorabilia, making it a must-visit for history buffs.
