The Baneswar Shiva Temple is one of the most sacred and historically significant temples in the Cooch Behar district, dedicated to Lord Shiva, locally known as Baneswar. It is situated in the small town of Baneswar. The temple's history is reputed to date back to ancient times, with the current stru cture often attributed to a rebuild or significant renovation by the Koch Dynasty kings, possibly in the 17th or 18th century, though some sources suggest links as far back as 1100 A.D. The most unique and revered feature of this temple is the main Shiva Lingam in the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), which is located about 10 feet (3.1 meters) below the plinth level. According to local belief, this Lingam is Swayambhu (self-originated). Beside the main shrine, there is another small temple housing the idol of Ardhanariswar (the form of Shiva representing the union of male and female). The temple premises are also famous for a large pond that is home to several very old and revered tortoises, locally known as "Mohan." Devotees consider feeding these tortoises auspicious. The peaceful, semi-rural setting makes it an important center for pilgrimage and a quiet spot for spiritual reflection. The deity here is also symbolically 'moved' to the Madan Mohan Temple in the city center during festivals like Madan Chaturdashi and Dol Purnima.
