How To Reach Athirappilly Waterfalls

Thrissur, Kerala, India
Athirappilly Waterfalls, often called the 'Niagara of India', is the largest waterfall in Kerala, located at the threshold of the Sholayar forest ranges and plunging approximately 80 feet into the forest below. The falls are part of the Chalakudy River, which is renowned for its biodiversity. The jo urney to Athirappilly itself is scenic, passing through thick forests where you might spot unique wildlife, including species of the great hornbill, and occasionally, elephants. The waterfall, with a width of about 330 feet during the peak monsoon, creates a majestic spectacle. Visitors can view the falls from a high viewpoint and also trek down a winding path (about 400 meters) to the bottom, where the view of the cascading water and the surrounding rainforest is breathtaking. The falls have been featured in many popular Indian films, further boosting their fame. Nearby, a short drive away, is the quieter, smaller Vazhachal Waterfalls and the lush green landscape of the Sholayar region. The entire area is a protected reserve, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, adventure, and tranquility.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), located about 40 KMS from the falls. This is the best approach route. From COK, hire a pre-paid taxi or a self-drive car directly to Athirappilly. The drive is scenic and takes about 1 to 1. 5 hours.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Chalakudy Railway Station (CKI), about 30 KMS from Athirappilly. This station is well-connected to Thrissur, Kochi, and other major cities. From Chalakudy, the falls are easily accessible by pre-booked taxi or local bus.

By Road: Athirappilly is well-connected to Thrissur City (60 KMS) and Kochi City (70 KMS) via the National Highway. The main route is through Chalakudy. Frequent local buses run from Chalakudy Bus Stand to the falls. The drive from Chalakudy is particularly beautiful, passing through lush green plantations and forests.

By Local Transport: From Chalakudy, the best option is to hire a taxi for a round trip to the falls and Vazhachal, as local bus services are less frequent, and a taxi allows you the flexibility to stop for photos. Auto-rickshaws are available in Chalakudy but might be expensive for the round trip.
