How To Reach Chakchaka Rajbari

Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India
Chakchaka Rajbari is a term sometimes locally used but the globally and historically recognized landmark is the Cooch Behar Palace, also known as the Victor Jubilee Palace. This architectural marvel stands as the most significant historical monument in the Cooch Behar district. It was constructed in 1887 during the reign of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan. The palace's design is heavily inspired by the classical Western style, particularly the Italian Renaissance and elements of Buckingham Palace in London, reflecting the Koch King's exposure to European influences. Originally a triple-storey structure, the palace was partially damaged in the great Assam earthquake of 1897, leading to the collapse of the third floor. Today, the majestic double-storeyed structure, made of red brick, is preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and has been converted into a museum. The palace complex includes a projected porch leading to the central Durbar Hall, numerous royal chambers, a billiard room, library, and the Toshakhana (treasure vault). It is surrounded by lush green lawns and a well-maintained park. The dome, resting on Corinthian columns, is the palace's most distinctive feature, towering over the city. The palace serves as a powerful reminder of the rich history of the Koch Dynasty and is a major cultural and historical attraction for tourists.
