How To Reach Chavara Bhavan
Chavara Bhavan is a revered Catholic pilgrimage center and the ancestral home of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara (Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara), a prominent 19th-century Catholic priest, social reformer, and educational pioneer in Kerala. The Bhavan is a holy shrine and spiritual center nestled in t he serene backwaters of the village of Kainakary, completely surrounded by water. Due to its unique location, the only way to reach it is by boat, which in itself offers a beautiful and tranquil journey through the famed Alleppey backwaters. The 250-year-old ancestral house is meticulously preserved, offering a profound insight into the simple life and roots of the saint who was instrumental in bringing about social and educational changes, including starting the first school for girls in Kerala. Visitors can explore the well-maintained house, which features a preserved historical beacon of light, a significant artifact tied to the saint's legacy. Adjacent to the ancestral home is a small, quiet church where devotees gather for prayer and reflection. The complex also houses a museum that displays various artifacts, documents, and memorabilia related to the life and works of Saint Chavara. His contributions went beyond religion; he promoted literacy, started the first printing press in the region, and worked tirelessly for the marginalized. The peaceful ambiance of the location, combined with its historical and spiritual significance, attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists alike, making it a unique stop in the Alleppey backwater circuit. How to Reach
By Air: (Nearest Major Airports)
The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), about 84 KMS north.
Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) is about 148 KMS south.
From COK/TRV: Hire a taxi or cab to Alappuzha town or the nearest major jetty for Kainakary, such as Pallathuruthy or Nedumudi, as the last leg requires a boat.
By Train: (Nearest Railway Station) The nearest major railway station is Alappuzha Railway Station (ALLP), located approximately 18-20 KMS from the nearest access point to Kainakary.
From ALLP: Take a taxi or auto-rickshaw to a boat-landing point like Pallathuruthy or the Alappuzha boat jetty, and then continue by boat.
By Road: (Bus and Private Vehicle)
To Kainakary: The village of Kainakary is the destination, but the Bhavan is on an island within the village. You can drive or take a bus to the Kainakary or Pallathuruthy boat jetty.
By Bus: Local buses run from Alappuzha town to areas like Nedumudi or Pallathuruthy. Ask the driver to drop you at the most convenient point for the Chavara Bhavan boat.
By Private/Hired Vehicle: Drive to the boat jetty on the mainland closest to Kainakary. You will need to leave your vehicle there as the rest of the journey is by water. By Local Transport (The Final Leg is Mandatory) Boat/Ferry (Essential) This is the mandatory final leg. Chavara Bhavan is only accessible by water.
Public Ferry: You can take a public water transport ferry from the main Alappuzha boat jetty or other local jetties to Kainakary. These are the most economical option.
Country Boat/Taxi Boat: Hire a private, motorized or non-motorized country boat for a direct and quicker ride from the mainland jetties. This is a more scenic and personalized option. Ensure the boat operator knows the location, which is a popular landmark.
