How To Reach Dhabaleswar Temple

Cuttack, Odisha, India:
Ancient Pilgrimage and Natural Setting: The Dhabaleswar Temple is a highly revered Shaiva shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in one of the most picturesque settings in Odisha: an island on the mighty Mahanadi River. The temple, adorned with ancient stone carvings dating back to the 10th and 11t h centuries, is a major pilgrimage center. The very name Dhabaleswar comes from the Odia words 'Dhabala' (white) and 'Eswar' (God), referencing a legend where Lord Shiva appeared as a white bull to protect a devotee. Historians note that this sacred place was once known as Hariharpitha. Situated amidst the tranquil, natural environment of the river island, it provides a spiritual retreat far removed from the noise of city life, making it a favorite destination for both devotees and nature lovers. The Iconic Suspension Bridge: A major attraction that significantly boosted its fame is the Suspension Bridge (Jhula Pola), which connects the island to the mainland. Inaugurated in 2007, this 245-meter-long pedestrian bridge is an architectural and engineering marvel, offering a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Mahanadi River's vast expanse. The journey across the bridge, either on foot or by a hired boat, dramatically heightens the sense of pilgrimage and adventure, making the temple a unique blend of spirituality and scenic beauty. The temple stands as a testament to the blend of cultural heritage, deep-seated religious faith, and modern engineering prowess in Odisha.

How to Reach

By Air: Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI), Bhubaneswar (Approx.

37 KM): The nearest major airport. From BBI, hire a pre-paid taxi or a reliable cab to the nearest mainland access point to the temple, either the bridge access point (near Mancheswar) or the boat point (Chahata Ghata in Cuttack).

By Train: Cuttack Junction Railway Station (CTC) (Approx.

17 KM): Cuttack is the nearest major railway hub. From CTC, you can hire a private taxi or an auto-rickshaw to the temple's access points. The journey from Cuttack by road to the bridge is a significant part of the total travel time.

By Road:

Via Choudwar/Athagarh Road: The temple is approximately 35-40 KM from Cuttack city by road via Choudwar or the Athagarh block road. Alternatively, you can drive to the mainland end of the Suspension Bridge. State buses and private taxis are available from Cuttack's Badambadi Bus Stand towards the temple's vicinity.

By Local Transport:

Taxi/Auto-rickshaw + Bridge/Boat: The journey is usually a combination of road transport (taxi/auto) to the river's edge, followed by a walk across the Suspension Bridge or a short boat ride (approx. 4 KM by boat from Chahata Ghata in Cuttack). Ensure the road vehicle waits for your return or arrange for local transport back, as public transport options at the island's access point can be limited.
