Historical Context and Conservation Mission: Established on October 2, 1976, the Iroishemba Zoological Garden, also known as the Manipur Zoological Garden, is nestled at the foothills of the pine-clad Iroisemba Hillocks. Its primary and most critical mission is the ex situ conservation of the highly endangered Sangai (Manipur brow-antlered deer, Cervus eldi eldi), the state animal, which is endemic to Manipur and found in the wild only at Keibul Lamjao National Park. The zoo acts as the crucial second habitat and the coordinating conservation breeding center for the species, along with others like the Serow (Sabeng).Species Diversity: The medium-sized zoological garden is home to over 400 animals and birds, representing a rich collection of wildlife, particularly species endemic to Manipur and the Northeast region.
