How To Reach Ram Rai Gurudwara

Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India
Guru Ram Rai Gurudwara, also known as Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib, is one of the most prominent and historically significant places of worship in Dehradun. Founded in 1676 by Guru Ram Rai, the eldest son of the Seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai, it holds immense religious importance, particularly f or the Udaseen sect of Sikhism. The city of Dehradun itself is said to have derived its name from the establishment of Guru Ram Rai’s camp (Dera) in the valley (Doon). The structure is a unique example of Indo-Islamic architecture, a result of the patronage and land provided by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The complex features a main Darbar with paintings and domes, surrounded by beautiful Mughal-style gardens. The Gurudwara is renowned for its philanthropic activities, running educational institutions and charitable hospitals. It hosts the spectacular annual Jhanda Mela festival, which takes place five days after Holi. The sacred shrine offers a tranquil environment, characterized by serene hymns and the daily practice of Langar, a community meal served to thousands of people without discrimination. The blend of Hindu, Sikh, and Mughal art forms makes it a cultural masterpiece. The Gurudwara's architecture is often compared to a mosque-style tomb rather than a traditional Sikh shrine, underscoring its historical connection to the Mughal court.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located about 30 km from the Gurudwara. A taxi from the airport will take about an hour and cost around Rs.1000. Ask the driver to drop you at Jhanda Bazar or the Gurudwara near the Clock Tower area.

By Train: Dehradun Railway Station (DDN) is very close, only about 1. 5 to 2 km away. You can hire an auto-rickshaw or a cycle-rickshaw, which takes less than 10 minutes to reach the Jhanda Bazar where the Gurudwara is situated.

By Road: From the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminal), which is about 8-9 km away, take a local city bus or a shared Vikram (auto-rickshaw) that plies the route towards the Clock Tower and get off at the Jhanda Bazar stop.

By Local Transport: The Gurudwara is in the bustling central area of Jhanda Bazar. Shared auto-rickshaws (Vikram) on the city routes are the most common and cost-effective way to reach the vicinity. Due to its prominence, nearly all local transport drivers are familiar with its location. Walking from the Clock Tower is another quick option.
