How To Reach Rudrasagar Lake

Melaghar, Tripura, India
Ecological Importance: Rudrasagar Lake is a natural sedimentation reservoir and a significant wetland located in the Melaghar block. It was designated a Ramsar Site (Wetland of International Importance) in 2005 for its rich biodiversity, especially its role as a winter habitat for a large number of waterfowl. The lake, with a geographical area of approximately 5.3 sq KM, receives flow from three perennial streams: Noacherra, Durlavnaraya cherra, and Kemtali cherra. It is a major component of the local ecosystem.Historical Landscape: The lake is inextricably linked to the Neermahal Water Palace, which stands majestically at its center. The lake was developed as a man-made water body in the 20th century under the patronage of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. The palace's construction enhanced the lake's cultural and historical significance, making it a prominent landmark of Tripura. The water body and the surrounding area are a vital part of the regional heritage.Hydrological Features: The lake water is relatively fresh, with an average depth varying from 2 to 9 meters. The lake bed is primarily formed by silt deposition. The hydrological balance is maintained by the input from the streams and the clear water discharge into the Gomati River through the Kachigang channel. The area is known for its high annual rainfall, spread over the monsoon months, which can lead to four to five flood peaks, demonstrating its function as a natural reservoir. This ecological function supports diverse flora and fauna.

By Road: Rudrasagar Lake is situated right beside the Melaghar town, accessible via road from Agartala (approx. 52 KM) and Udaipur (approx. 18 KM). State transport buses and shared auto-rickshaws (Tempos) run regularly between Agartala, Udaipur, and Melaghar. Driving to the lake by private car offers the most flexibility.
