Travel Tips Of Rudrasagar Lake

Melaghar, Tripura, India
Ecological Importance: Rudrasagar Lake is a natural sedimentation reservoir and a significant wetland located in the Melaghar block. It was designated a Ramsar Site (Wetland of International Importance) in 2005 for its rich biodiversity, especially its role as a winter habitat for a large number of waterfowl. The lake, with a geographical area of approximately 5.3 sq KM, receives flow from three perennial streams: Noacherra, Durlavnaraya cherra, and Kemtali cherra. It is a major component of the local ecosystem.Historical Landscape: The lake is inextricably linked to the Neermahal Water Palace, which stands majestically at its center. The lake was developed as a man-made water body in the 20th century under the patronage of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. The palace's construction enhanced the lake's cultural and historical significance, making it a prominent landmark of Tripura. The water body and the surrounding area are a vital part of the regional heritage.Hydrological Features: The lake water is relatively fresh, with an average depth varying from 2 to 9 meters. The lake bed is primarily formed by silt deposition. The hydrological balance is maintained by the input from the streams and the clear water discharge into the Gomati River through the Kachigang channel. The area is known for its high annual rainfall, spread over the monsoon months, which can lead to four to five flood peaks, demonstrating its function as a natural reservoir. This ecological function supports diverse flora and fauna.

Tourism Tips

Health & Safety: Be cautious near the water's edge, especially if traveling with children, as the water level can be high after the monsoon. Use a strong mosquito repellent as the area is a wetland. Carry a small first-aid kit for minor cuts or insect bites. Always stay informed about the local weather conditions before planning a boat trip.Packing: Carry essential sun protection items like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. A waterproof jacket or umbrella is advisable if traveling during the shoulder or monsoon seasons. For birdwatchers, binoculars and a good quality camera with a long-focus lens are essential. Wear comfortable, durable walking shoes.Accommodation: While a few budget options exist in Melaghar, the better and more comfortable places to stay are in the nearby city of Udaipur or the capital Agartala. Book a room at a tourist lodge near Udaipur (like the Gunabati Yatri Niwas) for a more serene experience, but ensure transport is pre-arranged.Other Tips: Respect the Wetland Ecology. Do not litter the lake premises or feed the birds human food. Hire an experienced boatman or guide for better guidance on bird spots and local history. The tranquility of the lake is its main attraction, so try to keep noise levels down.
