How To Reach Shakthan Thampuran Palace

Thrissur, Kerala, India
The Shakthan Thampuran Palace, also known historically as the Vadakkekara Palace, is a place of profound historical significance, representing the golden era of the Cochin dynasty. It was originally an old palace structure that was meticulously reconstructed in 1795 by Maharaja Rama Varma Shakthan T hampuran (1751–1805 AD), who is considered the greatest ruler of the Cochin lineage and the visionary behind the modern urban plan of Thrissur and the inception of the Thrissur Pooram. The palace now functions as an archaeological museum, preserved by the State Archaeological Department since 2005. The museum displays a wealth of historical artifacts, including an exceptional Bronze Gallery featuring statues from the 12th to 18th centuries, a Sculpture Gallery with ancient granite figures, and a fascinating Numismatics Gallery showcasing coins from different eras, including those of Tipu Sultan and the Roman Empire. The palace itself is a physical embodiment of the architectural shift during the period of Dutch influence in Kerala. The strategic location of the palace made it the nerve center of administration and power for the ruler who shaped much of central Kerala's cultural and political landscape. His legacy of strong rule and cultural patronage is encapsulated within these walls. (Word Count: 401)
