Koratty St. Mary's Forane Church

Thrissur, Kerala, India
General Details: Koratty St. Mary's Forane Church, popularly known as Koratty Muthy, is a world-renowned Marian pilgrimage center. Established in 1381, the church has a legendary origin involving a funeral procession that stopped here because the coffin became too heavy to move. The local queen of K oratty then donated land to build a church at that spot. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, affectionately called Koratty Muthy. The church is a symbol of communal harmony, attracting people of all faiths. The shrine is famous for the "Poovankula" (bunch of plantain) offering. Over the centuries, it has survived attacks and undergone several renovations, becoming one of the most important Catholic shrines in India. It is often compared to Velankanni due to the numerous miracles attributed to the deity. The church complex is vast and includes a beautiful Rosary Village that depicts the life of Jesus.
